In a pretty area, close to the Riserva Naturale di Caselli a beautiful area of woodland, streams and waterfalls which makes for some great trekking: The area is known for the abundant geothermal energy, and, indeed, a geothermal plant can be seen in the distance from the property. This uses steam which comes from the natural reservoirs of hot water below the earth's surface, as a perfect form of sustainable, renewable, green energy with zero emission pollution. It is possible to take guided trails to see the steam emerging naturally from the underground on the rocky outcrops in the area. The natural hot waters of the region are piped to the little towns and villages so the homes are heated at low cost with this green energy.
There are many Tuscan hilltop village scattered in the area. Sasso Pisano nearby is a beautiful, historical village in the region of Castelnuovo Val di Cecina. In the past this castle and the ancient village have been an important part of Tuscan history, and it sits in a dominant position overlooking the valley. There is a restaurant and bar in the village and there are many village festivals such as the Prugnolo mushroom festival, the Sasserino olive oil festival and the festival of San Bartolomeo. A particular feature of the village is the fabulous bathing and health spa powered by the hot springs of the area which has now been restored to provide a centre for well being with hydromassage and there is even a 'putizza' with jets of hot water and mud treatments. There are also tennis courts and a campers area.
Valdicecina an easily accessible area which is quite charming with a combination of history, culture and excellent cuisine. Castelnuovo Val di Cecina is a small medieval village in the heart of Tuscany, south of Pisa, on the border between the provinces of Pisa, Siena and Grosseto. The town has ancient origins dating back to the thirteenth century and the village has preserved the ancient character and is full of antique features. The antique village is unique and is famed for its shape as a bunch of grapes, with the layout still that of a medieval town, built in sandstone, with calm little lanes, pretty chapels and sweet little piazzas. From the medieval part of Castelnuovo, the town streets are flanked with small shops and local cafes, a bank and a post office. Modern life and amenities are all within an easy stroll.
